UW seeks donations of school supplies

Youngstown

United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is collecting school supplies for its annual Stuff the Bus collection.

It is accepting donations of pencils, pens, crayons, markers, pencil cases, erasers, scissors, glue sticks and rulers.

Donations can be dropped off at the UW office, 255 Watt St. Cash donations also will be accepted.

Huntington Bank is donating backpacks to Our United Way that the organization will distribute to children in need. Donations of school supplies will be stuffed into the backpacks. For information, call 330-746-8494.

Garden cleanup set on Hillman St.

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Inner City Garden at 3406 Hillman St. is teaming up with Green Youngstown, the city’s recycling and litter prevention unit, to clean up the area around the garden from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Being cleaned are the vacant lots across the street from the garden and the abandoned house next to it on the city’s South Side.

Volunteers are needed to help cut the grass and to remove weeds, brush and debris. Food will be provided to participants.

Library seeks input on its strategic plan

Public comment meetings have been scheduled for next week concerning the My Library 2020 strategic plan of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The meetings will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the main library, 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Austintown branch; and 6 p.m. Thursday at the Newport branch.

Final ‘Faces of Fair’

CANFIELD

This year will be the last year for Canfield Fair attendees to participate in the photography event “Faces of the Fair.”

Staff at the Fine Arts Building will take photos of fair attendees to be placed in a montage for next year. Postcards, posters and prints of the montage created at last year’s fair will be sold. The montage displays a tractor image filled with the faces of those who attended last year.

All proceeds from the sale will go to the fair’s Fine Arts Department.

The 167th fair starts Aug. 28 and ends on Labor Day, Sept. 2.

Brookfield trustees to pick health rep

Brookfield

Brookfield Township trustees will have a special meeting at 5 p.m. today in the township administration building, 6844 Strimbu Drive, to appoint a trustee to serve as the board’s representative at Trumbull County health board meetings.

Garden District group sets meeting

Youngstown

The Garden District Neighborhood Association will have its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mill Creek MetroParks’ Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave.

The Section 8 coordinator from Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority will be a guest speaker. The open meeting will give attendees an opportunity to ask questions on Section 8 housing.

Section 8 is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s major program for assisting very low-income people to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.
