1934 Gehrig baseball card sold for $125,332

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif.

A 1934 Lou Gehrig baseball card sold for $125,332 and a 1916 Babe Ruth rookie card went for $51,450 in SCP Auctions’ Summer Auction.

SCP Auctions said Thursday that the auction amassed over $2.2 million, with a 1980-1981 Larry Bird/Magic Johnson rookie card selling for $60,667 and Travis Jervey’s 1996 Green Bay Super Bowl ring going for $37,610.

Skipper says Cup champ Oracle cheated

Skipper Max Sirena of Italy’s Luna Rossa is the latest America’s Cup competitor to accuse defending champion Oracle Team USA of cheating.

When asked Thursday at a news conference about the latest America’s Cup controversy, Sirena said, “For sure.”

Oracle last week acknowledged it modified its boats without permission of the Measurement Committee for four America’s Cup World Series regattas last year, which were warm-ups to the 34th America’s Cup.

Oracle’s admission prompted Grant Dalton, the managing director of Emirates Team New Zealand, to tell the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday that he thought the American syndicate was cheating.

Flyers’ Claude Giroux has finger surgery

PHILADELPHIA

Flyers captain Claude Giroux had surgery on his right index finger after getting injured on a golf course in Ottawa.

Giroux sustained tendon damage when a golf club shattered and splintered into his finger Thursday.

It’s unknown what caused the club to shatter.

Giroux is expected to make a full recovery in five to six weeks.

Last month, Philadelphia signed Giroux to an eight-year contract extension worth over $64 million.

Giroux was hurt playing overseas during the lockout last year and finished with only 13 goals and 48 points for the Flyers. He has 291 points (91 goals, 200 assists) in 333 career games spread over six seasons in Philadelphia.

Chivas USA sued for alleged discrimination

LOS ANGELES

A former executive is suing the Chivas USA soccer team, claiming she was the target of discrimination because she wasn’t Latino and couldn’t speak Spanish.

The Torrance Daily Breeze reports the suit was filed in Los Angeles by former human resources manager Cynthia Craig, who is black.

The suit says Craig left the Southern California team in July after repeated harassment by owner Jorge Vergara and team President Jose David.

Messages seeking comment from Chivas representatives weren’t immediately returned Thursday.

It’s not the first discrimination lawsuit against Chivas.
