Family story time at the Boardman library July 31 was a silly hour for all involved.
“Today, I thought it would be fun if we just did some silly songs and silly rhymes,” said librarian Katherina Matasic.
She read three books to the group: “The Mixed-Up Chameleon,” “I Am Invited to a Party!” and “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!”
“The pigeon books are so funny,” Matasic told the children. “They crack me up.”
Olivia Pickens agreed.
“I like the pigeon books,” she said. “My favorite pigeon book would be ‘The Pigeon Loves Things That Go.’”
All of the pigeon books are silly, Pickens said, which is why she likes them.
Her mother, Beth Pickens, said the story time topic was great.
“This is right up their alley,” she said. “They love silly stuff. It’s some of their favorite things to read about.”
Olivia’s siblings, Julia and Sammy, participated in the story time, as well.
The activities in between books, such as the “Tooty Ta” dance, kept Sammy involved, Beth said.
“I was worried about bringing a two-year-old to a library program, but the way they got up and moved really kept him busy,” she said.
In addition to reading books and dancing, Matasic lead the children in various finger plays and songs.
At the end of story time, the children made mixed-up animal crafts. They chose a head, body and tail from a lion, giraffe, flamingo or alligator, and glued the pieces to a piece of paper to create a new animal.
Julia and Olivia said it was fun. Julia simply called hers “giraffe” and Olivia named hers “lionheadgiraffeflamingotail,” after the body parts she used.
“It’s really funny,” Olivia said.
