Hitchcock Woods celebrates 30 years

Hitchcock Woods Learning Center celebrated 30 years of service to the community with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 5.
The full-service day care, pre school and chartered kindergarten, located at 8482 Hitchcock Road in Boardman, started in 1983 by Pattie Welsh and has been growing ever since.
Welsh attributed the success of the school to a number of factors.
“We have a phenomenal staff and so much family support,” said Welsh.
Welsh said of the staple of the school is to build self- esteem in the children.
“I had a very difficult time in school and I always felt if someone could have helped me to build my confidence I would have been able to do so much more,” said Welsh. “Once you build that self-esteem all the learning will fall into place.”
Jodi Mika, former employee, worked at the center for 12 years. She attributed the success of the school to Pattie and the staff.
“They’ve always treated the kids like extended family,” said Mika. “They are so welcoming.”
Betty Cmil, assistant director, echoed Mika’s sentiments.
“The staff pulls together to help each other out,” said Cmil.
