Ohio State Highway Patrol investigating five-vehicle crash in Howland
HOWLAND
Eight people were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries after five vehicles, including an Allied Waste garbage truck, crashed Thursday at state Route 82 and Howland Wilson Road.
At about 1:30 p.m., an Oldsmobile Aurora driven by 58-year-old Candice Banks of Westlake and a Pontiac Grand Am driven by 29-year-old Ashley Miller of New Middletown were stopped eastbound on state Route 82 in the right lane at a red light at Howland Wilson Road.
A garbage truck driven by 20-year-old Adam Slater of Kinsman was also heading east on state Route 82 in the right lane, but failed to stop. Slater hit the back of Miller’s car, causing Miller to hit Banks’ car and a Volvo XC90 driven by 53-year-old Elizabeth Lazor of Madison, Conn., in the left lane.
The garbage truck then hit Banks’ car, which was pushed into a Honda Civic driven by 69-year-old Ronald Spore of Warren. Spore’s car had been stopped northbound on Howland Wilson Road.
Those injured were taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Hospital, and the intersection was shut down to traffic shortly after the accident.
Slater was cited for failing to maintain an assured clear distance, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Warren Post.
