Spikes edge Scrappers on walk-off single

Staff report

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ Claudio Bautista scored the winning run in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday night. A night later, Bautista and his teammates experienced the other side of a walk-off ending.

With Mahoning Valley and State College tied at 1, the Spikes’ Steven Ramos singled to center field against reliever Breily Puerta to start the bottom of the ninth and stole second.

Ramos took third on a single to left field by Cesar Valera and moments later scored the game-winning run when the Spikes’ Brett Wiley smacked a line-drive single to center field.

Both teams scored in the first inning. The Scrappers got their only run on an infield single by Nellie Rodriguez and a throwing error.

David Washington had an RBI single for State College.

The teams meet again at 7:05 tonight.
