Jazz quartets in lakefront show

The Youngstown State University Faculty Jazz Quartet and the YSU Student Jazz Quartet will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the waterfront amphitheater at Lake Milton State Park. The event is sponsored by the Lake Milton Nature Arts Council.

Admission is $10.

The Faculty Quartet features Kent Engelhardt on saxophones, Dave Morgan on bass, Glenn Schaft on drums and YSU’s newest Jazz Faculty member, Alton Merrell, on piano.

The Quartet will perform music by songwriter Matt Dennis, who created hit songs for Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, and many others, as well as selections performed by saxophonist Charlie Parker, which have been part of Engelhardt’s recent Research Professorship.

The Student Quintet features Ben Holmes on saxophone, Katelyn DeLadurantey on vocals, Clay Colley on piano, Rob Chase on bass and Nick Sainato on drums. They will present standards, jazz compositions and originals.

The gates open at 6:30 p.m., and YSU Student Jazz Quintet will begin at 7 p.m. followed by the YSU Faculty Quartet at 8 p.m.

Vernon’s Cafe will be cooking a selection of items for purchase, and wine will be available for purchase by the bottle and glass. A wine sommelier will be on hand at the opening of the event to extend a fun discussion regarding wine. Beer and other beverages also will be available. Guests can bring a blanket or chair. Picnic tables also are on the site.

Volunteers will be selling paving stones for the construction of a new patio at the entrance to the amphitheater. The stones can be engraved with a message, a family name, or in memory of a loved one.
