ITCL divisions differ for boys, girls sports

Beginning this school year the Inter Tri-County League will determine division alignments separately for boys and girls sports. Since its inception in 2006 the league has used total enrollment to determine whether a school is Tier 1 or Tier 2 for all sports.

Under the new format boys and girls enrollments are ranked separately. For boys sports (football, golf, basketball, baseball, track), Tier 1 schools are South Range (165 boys), Crestview (151), East Palestine (147), United (130), Columbiana (130), Springfield (126), Lisbon (125) and Southern (122). Tier 2 boys schools are Jackson-Milton (119), Mineral Ridge (118), Wellsville (111), McDonald (98), Western Reserve (91), Leetonia (84), Lowellville (78) and Sebring (72).

The girls sports (volleyball, basketball, softball, track) alignment is: Tier 1, South Range (152), United (152), East Palestine (144), Springfield (134), Crestview (117), Mineral Ridge (117), Lisbon (114), Jackson-Milton (114); Tier 2, McDonald (113), Southern (110), Columbiana (101), Leetonia (101), Wellsville (100), Western Reserve (96), Lowellville (87) and Sebring (62).

All participating schools are combined in one tier for cross country, boys and girls soccer and wrestling.

Alouettes sign former Buckeye QB Smith

The 29-year-old Smith won the Heisman Trophy with Ohio State in 2006, leading the Buckeyes to a spot in the BCS national championship game. Smith spent three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, and was with the San Francisco 49ers in 2010. He played for Omaha in the UFL in 2011.

No. 1s Serena Williams, Djokovic advance

MASON

Serena Williams came to net for an easy put-away shot. She missed the line — and everything else, too. Williams overcame what she described as one of her worst sets before beating qualifier Eugenie Bouchard of Canada 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday in her opening match at the Western & Southern Open. At least she won.

Older sister Venus Williams lost her second match of the tournament, falling to Russia’s Elena Vesnina 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. The 33-year-old Williams is slowly working back into shape after missing most of the summer because of a lower back injury. Cincinnati was only her second event since the French Open.

The top seeds advanced on a windy and cooler-than-usual afternoon. No. 1 Novak Djokovic had a ragged first set while beating Juan Monaco 7-5, 6-2, leaving him 8-0 career against the Argentine.
