Humane Society of Columbiana County will sponsor an open house at its new Animal Resource Complex, 721 E. Pidgeon Road., Salem
When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday with a free poochie playtime from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for small dogs and from 7 to 8 p.m. for large dogs. Proof of vaccinations, rabies and spay and neuter must be provided to participate. Starting Aug. 26, the complex will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
Available: Climate- controlled indoor walking, dog-friendly events, private parties, dog training and services and a retail area will be featured. Pet and animal services from the community will be available to promote their organizations.
About the society: Humane Society of Columbiana County is a no-kill, no- suffering, nonprofit animal- welfare organization that investigates claims of cruelty, abuse and neglect and adopts animals into lifelong homes, while focusing on curbing pet overpopulation. HSCC sponsors humane agents who are trained and court-appointed at no cost to taxpayers. HSCC maintains its own mission statement and bylaws and has a seven-member board of directors who act in accordance with the bylaws and Ohio law.
Funding: HSCC operates on private donations. It is an independent membership organization and is not an affiliate of any national organization or government entity.
Donations: In addition to financial contributions, most- needed supplies are clay kitty litter, bleach, paper towels, laundry detergent, dish soap, latex gloves, postage stamps, envelopes, copy paper and straw.
Shelter: Located at 1825 S. Lincoln Ave., Salem, the shelter is open from noon to 4 p.m. Sundays and Mondays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, 4 to 7 p.m. Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
Adoption: Adopters must complete an application and meet with an adoption counselor.
Programs: Humane education and community service, Guardian Angel and foster programs and reduced-cost spay and neuter.
Get involved: Volunteer, donate, become a member or help at special events. HSCC accepts volunteers who need to complete community- service hours.
