Brazil minister: Speed up work for World Cup

SAO PAULO

Brazil’s sports minister says he’s concerned about the pace of stadium construction for the 2014 World Cup.

Aldo Rebelo says work needs to pick up at five of the six stadiums under construction because they “are facing a tight deadline.” They need to be ready by December.

The minister says only the Sao Paulo stadium — hosting the opening match in June — is expected to be completed on time.

Officials of the soccer world governing body have made it clear that they want all 12 stadiums ready by December.

FIFA officials have said they won’t tolerate similar stadium delays similar to those ahead of the Confederations Cup.

Former Iceland player can play soccer for US

CHICAGO

Aron Johannsson is eligible to play for the USA in today’s exhibition against Bosnia-Herzegovina after FIFA approved his request to switch national teams.

Johannsson was born in Mobile, Ala., but moved to his parents’ native Iceland when he was 3 years old. Because he played for Iceland at the Under-21 level, appearing in eight qualifiers for the 2012 UEFA Under-21 Championship, he needed FIFA’s approval to switch national teams.

Johannsson says he didn’t expect to be eligible when he was called into this week’s training camp, and is “super happy” the switch was approved. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann says there’s a chance the forward, who plays professionally for AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, could get make his U.S. debut in tonight’s game in Sarajevo.

Jackson, John Lennon and Gandhi team up

RIO DE JANEIRO

How’s this for a trio? A soccer team with Michael Jackson playing alongside John Lennon and Mahatma Gandhi.

Carlos Adriano, soccer director for the Brazilian Serie B club Atletico Goianiense, says the team has signed a forward known as Michael Jackson — his real name is Carlos Adriano de Sousa Cruz.

Like many Brazilian players, he goes by a nickname rather than his family name or given name.

Jackson could play with a couple of famously named teammates: John Lennon, full name John Lennon Silva Santos; and Mahatma Gandhi, full name Mahatma Gandhi Heber Pio.
