Suspect identified

WARREN

Video footage of an incident at the Sunoco gas station at West Market Street and Tod Avenue has helped identify a suspect in the July 21 assault.

Eric Pettis, 30, of Warren, was taken into custody Tuesday and has been charged with felonious assault in the case.

Warren police said they filed an arrest warrant for Pettis on Tuesday after someone viewing surveillance video of incident from a news report identified him and called police.

In the incident, a 31-year-old Mississippi man suffered a minor injury after three men at the gas station struck and stomped on him about 3:30 a.m. before one of the men fired a gun at him two times — once inside the gas station and once outside.

Both shots missed, but he was injured from the other assaults. Pettis could face up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Fire destroys 2 homes

CRAIG BEACH

Flames destroyed two village homes as a 2007 contract prevented village firefighters from responding to the blaze.

The fire started Tuesday morning at one home on Afton Avenue and spread to a second house. Residents told Vindicator broadcast news partner 21 WFMJ-TV they believe the second home could have been saved but for a 2007 contract calling for the Milton Township Fire Department to handle village fires through 2015.

Even though Craig Beach volunteer firefighters were closer, they weren’t able to respond, according to 21 WFMJ-TV.

No one was injured, and the state fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
