Toledo fights release of police department gang map to newspaper

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The mayor of one of Ohio’s largest cities plans to continue a fight against the release of a police department gang-territories map.

The Blade newspaper in Toledo filed a lawsuit last year against the city for refusing to make the gang map public.

The newspaper today published what it says is a copy of the map it obtained from a source. City and police officials won’t confirm whether the map is the authorities’ map.

The city has said the gang map is used in active criminal investigations and is not a public record.

But a state appeals court said in July the city of Toledo should release it. The city is now appealing that decision and says it will continue to oppose releasing the document.
