Police-chief candidates

NEWTON FALLS

Village council met in executive session Monday afternoon to narrow the selection of a new police chief to about six candidates.

The selection of a new chief is likely to be several weeks away, officials said. Sgt. Rick Lisum has served as acting chief since February, when village council fired John Kuivila as chief.

Kuivila’s firing followed allegations by two female police-department employees — a clerk who accused Kuivila of making remarks about her appearance and “certain body parts” soon after she returned to work from maternity leave, and an officer who said she felt she was working in a hostile work environment because of a threat she said Kuivila made to her regarding the police-department clerk.
