Philly cop shot in abdomen, in critical condition
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia police officer was shot and critically wounded today after struggling with a suspect inside a store, authorities said.
The suspect had been pulled over for a broken taillight but was evasive when a police officer questioned him and then sped away after handing over his identification, Deputy Police Commissioner Richard Ross said at a news conference.
Police later spotted the man’s car and chased him into a store in the city’s Feltonville section, where they struggled with him for several minutes, Ross said. The suspect had a gun and shot one of the officers during the struggle, he said.
The 41-year-old police officer, a six-year veteran of the force, was hit in the abdomen. He underwent surgery at Temple University Hospital.
“We’re hopeful that the officer will be OK, but we have to wait on the doctors to give us that information,” Ross said.
The officer’s name was not immediately released.
The suspect, 31, was arrested. His name was not released.
