Sophomore Katie Hohmann and freshman Kathy Baquero each scored a goal to lead the Youngstown State women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Duquesne in a three 30-minute periods exhibition game at Stambaugh Stadium on Monday evening. Junior goalkeeper Jackie Podolsky recorded five saves and did not allow a goal. The Penguins host California (Pa.) in an exhibition game Monday.

Area golfers do well at collegiate preview

Four area golfers were among the top 14 finishers Monday in a Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf collegiate preview at Barrington, Country Club in Aurora. Steven Sveda of Youngstown shot a 3-over 75 to finish six shots back of winner Dennis Holub of Reminderville. Brandon Pluchinsky of North Lima was tied for seventh at 77, Thomas Lydic of Champion was tied for 10 with a 79 and Justin Hallapy of Hubbard was tied for 14th with an 81. The event was for golfers aged 18-22.

PED comment costs Clark, co-host jobs

ST. LOUIS

Former St. Louis Cardinals star Jack Clark is out of his sports talk radio job along with co-host after saying Albert Pujols took performance-enhancing drugs. Clark said on the air last week on WGNU in St. Louis that Pujols’ former trainer, Chris Mihlfeld, told him 10 years ago that he injected PEDs into Pujols, the former Cardinals great now in his second season with the Angels but sidelined by a foot injury.

Pujols responded with a vehement denial on Friday night and said he planned to take legal action against Clark and his employers. Early Saturday, the company that owns the show hosted by Clark and Kevin Slaten, insideSTL Enterprises LLC, said in a statement that Clark “is no longer associated with the company,” then later cancelled the show, costing Slaten his job, too.

Slaten said Monday that he plans to sue over his termination. He said he didn’t know why he was let go. Clark said he was weighing a lawsuit.

Four months later, the Philadelphia 76ers have a new coach. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday the Sixers have hired San Antonio assistant Brett Brown to replace Doug Collins, who resigned in April. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move has not been officially announced.

Fraser-Pryce wins 100; Oliver takes hurdles

So far, the U.S.-Jamaica sprint rivalry is turning into a rout at the world championships. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce rubbed it in Monday with a winning margin of Bolt-esque proportions in the women’s 100 meters. Her hot-pink colored hair slashing in the air behind her, Fraser-Pryce flashed to an early lead and kept on building it before crossing in a world leading 10.71 seconds.

She had time to clench her fist as she crossed the line with silver medalist Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast a massive .22 behind. The first American, defending champion Carmelita Jeter of the United States, took bronze in 10.94. The United States got its part of the glory, too, when David Oliver led a 1-2 finish in the 110 hurdles. In the women’s 400, Christine Ohuruogu set a British record to regain the world title she first won in 2007, dipping at the line to cap a great comeback and beat defending champion Amantle Montsho of Botswana by .004 seconds. In the shot put, Valerie Adams became the first woman to win four straight individual world titles.

Youth swimming medalist has local ties

Justin Knauf, 7, son of Chaney graduate the former Tracie Gaia and grandson of Youngstown residents Pat and Maryann Gaia recently earned two gold medals in relay events and a silver medal in the 25-yard freesyle at the National Youth Swimming Games of American in Hershey, Pa. Knauf is a resident of Marietta, Ga., and is a member of the Walker’s Ridge Tidal Waves swim team.
