SPARTANBURG, S.C.
Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera says backup fullback Mike Zordich has torn the ACL in his left knee and will be placed on injured reserve this week. Rivera made the announcement after Sunday night’s practice. Zordich, from Cardinal Mooney and Penn State, was injured covering a first-quarter kickoff in Carolina’s preseason game Friday night against the Chicago Bears.
Nadal beats Raonic in Rogers Cup final

Rafael Nadal beat Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-2 on Sunday in the Rogers Cup final, spoiling Raonic’s bid to become the first Canadian winner in the event in 55 years. Nadal, playing his first tournament since a first-round loss at Wimbledon in June, posted his eighth win this year and the 58th of his career. On Saturday night in the semifinals, Nadal beat two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2).
Serena Williams wins Rogers Cup in romp
TORONTO
Serena Williams won the Rogers Cup for the third time, routing unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 in Sunday’s final. The top-ranked woman captured her eighth WTA title of the year and 54th of her career. Williams has lost only one match since March, a stunning early exit at Wimbledon. She did not drop a set this week and was tested only in her semifinal against third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska.
Alabama’s Talley wins US Women’s Amateur
CHARLESTON, S.C.
Emma Talley, a rising Alabama sophomore, won the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Sunday, beating Yueer Cindy Feng 2 and 1 at the Country Club of Charleston. Talley squandered a three-up lead early in the afternoon round but took the lead for good with a birdie on the 10th hole and didn’t let Feng back in front.

Winners Saturday night during Sharon Speedway’s Fan Appreciation Night were Rex King of Bristolville in the Governor Insurance DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds; Dennis Lunger Jr. of Albion, Pa., in the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models; Scott Stiffler of Farmdale in the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds; Tim Burns of Greenville, Pa., in the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars; Jacob Eucker of Hartford in the HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods and Scott Gilliland of Warren in the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks.
King surprised race-long leader Jim Weller Jr. with a late outside pass to capture his division-leading fourth victory of the season. Stiffler became the 11th different Modified winner in 15 races this season. Eucker, 12, posted his fourth win of the season in the Econo Mods. Gilliland won his sixth Mini Stocks race of the season but first since June 1.
On Saturday the BOSS non-wing Sprint Cars Series will be on hand joined by the Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Touring Series in the $2,000 to-win Gary Knollinger Memorial. Also on the card will be the Stock Cars, Econo Mods and Mini Stocks. Race time is 7 p.m.
Mercer win dedicated to late grandfather

Adam Kekich crossed the finish line Saturday at Mercer Raceway Park for the win in the 410 Sprint feature, presented by Luxaire Heating & Cooling, New Wilmington Motors, and Ralph Butch, Inc. The third-generation driver dedicated the victory to his late grandfather, Paul “Putsy” Kekich, a very popular and successful racer in his day.
