ATM catches fire during robbery attempt
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police say an ATM caught fire at a bank after thieves had cut wires to try to disable an alarm during an attempted robbery.
WCAU-TV reports the suspects had broken into the back door of a Wells Fargo location in south Philadelphia around 5 a.m. today. Police say they cut some wiring and were apparently trying to disable an alarm when the machine caught fire.
Investigators say they aren’t totally sure what caused the blaze to start. It also wasn’t immediately clear if any money was taken from the bank.
Authorities say they also don’t know if the incident was connected to another robbery that happened around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at a different bank about a mile and a half away.
Police have not announced any arrests.
