SANAA, Yemen
Suspected al-Qaida gunmen killed five soldiers early Sunday in a southern province of Yemen, an official said, as U.S. embassies across the Muslim and Arab world reopened after a terror threat emanating from the region.
The U.S. Embassy in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, remained closed Sunday after American officials flew its diplomatic staff out of the country over fears of attack. Eighteen other diplomatic posts Middle East and Africa were to reopen, the State Department said.
Teen, abductor stood out, horse riders say
BOISE, Idaho
Almost from the moment he laid eyes on 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and her abductor, James Lee DiMaggio, former Idaho county Sheriff Mark John was swept with the feeling that something just didn’t seem right about the pair.
At a news conference Sunday in Boise, John and his three riding mates shared the kind of details from their encounters with Anderson and DiMaggio that helped focus the massive manhunt and rescue effort in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, a 3,600-square-mile preserve in Idaho.
DiMaggio is suspected of killing Anderson’s mother and brother at his home in Southern California.
Car company’s plans fail to materialize
TUNICA, Miss.
Four years ago, a startup car company announced with great fanfare big plans for the Mississippi Delta: Using money from foreign investors and other sources, it would build a massive auto plant to churn out a new line of energy-efficient cars and bring thousands of jobs to the area.
It seemed like a win for everyone involved. Today, the place where the plant was to be remains mostly vacant except for a temporary construction trailer. The company — GreenTech Automotive Inc. — is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the probe is reverberating well beyond Mississippi’s borders.
