Pilot in Conn. crash survived ’09 crash

HARTFORD, Conn.

The plane accident that killed four people in a Connecticut neighborhood was not the first crash for the pilot, a former Microsoft executive who was taking his teenage son on a tour of East Coast colleges.

The pilot, Bill Henningsgaard, 54, was killed along with his son, Maxwell, 17, and two children who were in a house struck by the small, propeller-driven plane Friday.

Henningsgaard, a highly regarded philanthropist, was flying a small plane to Seattle in 2009 with his mother when the engine quit. He crash-landed on Washington’s Columbia River. His mother also survived that crash.

A wave of car bombings targeting those celebrating the end of Ramadan across Iraq killed 69 people Saturday, a bloody reminder of the inability of Iraqi authorities to stop violence threatening to spiral out of control.

Violence has been on the rise across Iraq since a deadly crackdown by government forces on a Sunni protest camp in April, and attacks against civilians and security forces notably spiked during Ramadan. The surge of attacks has sparked fears that the country could see a new round of widespread sectarian bloodshed similar to that which brought the country to the edge of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

Singer Eydie Gorme dies at age 84

Eydie Gorme, a popular nightclub and television singer as a solo act and as a team with her husband, Steve Lawrence, has died. She was 84.

Gorme, who also had a huge solo hit in 1963 with “Blame it on the Bossa Nova,” died Saturday at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas after a brief, undisclosed illness, said her publicist, Howard Bragman.

Gorme was a successful band singer and nightclub entertainer when she was invited to join the cast of Steve Allen’s local New York television show in 1953. She sang solos and also did duets and comedy skits with Lawrence, a rising young singer.

They married in Las Vegas in 1957 and later performed for audiences there. Lawrence, the couple’s son, David, and other loved ones were by her side when she died, Bragman said.

6 killed by hot lava

MAUMERE, Indonesia

Hot lava from an erupting volcano killed six people sleeping in a beach village on a small island in eastern Indonesia on Saturday, after ash and smoke from the volcano shot about a mile into the air, officials said.

Mount Rokatenda in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted early Saturday, and nearly 3,000 people have been evacuated from the area on Palue island, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. The volcano has been rumbling since last October.

Driver, 13, hits bus in La., injuring 13

SHREVEPORT, La.

Police say a 13-year-old boy driving a pickup truck ran a stop sign and then cut off a city bus in Shreveport, La., causing a collision that left him and 12 others injured, some seriously.

At least two people remain hospitalized after the Friday night crash. The boy driver of the truck and 41-year-old bus driver Jenet Howell were in fair condition Saturday afternoon at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport.

Shreveport police spokesman Cpl. Marcus Hines says the boy likely will face juvenile charges of driving without a license, running a stop sign and reckless driving.
