POLICE CALLS
A summary of recent criminal activity in Girard and Liberty:
GIRARD
Aug. 3
Criminal mischief: A woman noticed scratches on her car while visiting a friend in the 200 block of East Main Street.
Burglary: To a residence in the 100 block of Trumbull Avenue via the front porch. Stolen were two laptop computers and a cellphone, for a $1,600 loss.
Possible breaking and entering: Officers responded to two people who reportedly tried to enter a garage in the 200 block of East Second Street. Apparently a homeowner saw the two and they fled.
Recovered property: An abandoned bicycle was retrieved on property in the 400 block of North State Street.
Assault: A Lawrence Avenue woman alleged her son’s father punched her face.
Dog bite: A North St. Clair Avenue woman reported a neighbor’s dog bit her.
Aug. 5
Arrest: Police picked up 35-year-old Bradley S. Salus as he was walking near Church Hill-Hubbard Road. Salus, of 106 N. Osborn St., Youngstown, was wanted on an Austintown warrant charging unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Breaking and entering: Someone entered an apartment in the 200 block of Trumbull Avenue and took various tools, copper piping and wiring.
Menacing: A woman attending a baseball practice at a field off Gayla Avenue reported another woman yelled profanities and threatened to beat her up.
Aug. 6
Theft: A Trumbull Avenue man reported several tires, pieces of aluminum, brass fittings and a car battery stolen from his property.
Vehicle theft: A 1998 Suzuki motorcycle was stolen in the 100 block of Elruth Court.
Recovered property: Police recovered a mountain bike while on patrol near Tod Park off U.S. Route 422.
LIBERTY
July 30
Theft: Aaron A. Jones, 32, of 1701 Elm Road NE, Warren, was issued a summons after a 1-gallon container of antifreeze was stolen from Giant Eagle, 4700 Belmont Ave.
Assault: A man at a Belmont Avenue grocery store told police a Girard man grabbed and squeezed the accuser’s neck, causing him severe pain.
Criminal damaging: A home in the 1100 block of Academy Drive had a damaged bay window, likely done with a BB.
Theft: A Warren man discovered a memorial cross and an angel decoration had been removed from a gravesite at a cemetery off Church Hill-Hubbard Road.
Theft: A Tuttle Lane woman noticed a $300 push mower missing from a shed.
Aug. 1
Arrest: Police in Youngstown picked up 41-year-old Jason Hymes, 1144 Norwood Ave., Youngstown, who was wanted on a township warrant charging failure to appear for a violation-of-probation hearing.
Menacing: An Arms Drive woman told police her former husband sent her a threatening text message alluding to the recent case of Ariel Castro, who pleaded guilty to a 937-count indictment accusing him of having held three women hostage for 10 years in his Cleveland home.
Harassment: A West Montrose Street woman alleged her former boyfriend posted nude photographs of her online, though police said it appeared the material had been removed.
Drugs: A traffic stop near Euclid Avenue resulted in 26-year-old Kristopher P. Rafferty’s arrest on a charge of possession of drug-abuse instruments. Rafferty, of 3099 Goleta Ave., Liberty, had four hypodermic needles and a straw for drug-related activity, a report said.
Aug. 2
Arrest: Authorities at the Mahoning County jail arrested Keith G. Gray, 29, of 34 Hartzell Ave., Girard. Gray was accused of failing to appear in court.
Stolen property: A suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of Colonial Drive caught officers’ attention before they filed two felony counts of receiving stolen property against 20-year-old Torrance L. Davis of 3045 Green Acres Drive, Liberty. The Nissan truck Davis was in had been stolen in Copley, Ohio; a license plate on the vehicle was reported stolen in Youngstown, a report showed.
Theft: Two bank deposits were missing from a safe at an East Liberty Street motel.
Misuse of a credit card: A Goldie Road woman noticed two suspicious charges to her credit card totaling $535.
Aug. 3
Theft: Bryan D. Dedon, 31, of 264 W. Dennick St., Youngstown, was charged after a woman reported a Smartphone had been removed from her car as she shopped at a Goldie Road store.
Criminal damaging: A van in the 5000 block of Greenbriar Drive was found with a broken driver’s-side window.
Drugs: A traffic stop on Hadley Avenue led to minor-misdemeanor summons charging 32-year-old Herbert A. Shelton, 3141 Hadley, Liberty, with having four suspected marijuana cigars in his vehicle.
Arrest: Robert W. Andrews, 20, of 2921 Belmar Ave., Liberty, was taken into custody during a traffic stop near Roosevelt Drive. Andrews was charged with driving under suspension and was wanted on a warrant accusing him of failing to appear in court.
Drugs: Officers charged David Oliver, 20, of 3615 Erie St., Youngstown, with marijuana possession and possession of dangerous drugs, as well as Willie A. Hendrix, 34, of 811 W. Indianola Ave., Youngstown, with marijuana possession and having an open container of alcohol after pulling them over on Belmont Avenue. Hendrix had a bag of suspected marijuana in his waistband; Oliver had a bag of pills in his pocket, a report said.
Aug. 4
Felonious assault: Authorities received information about a possible stabbing at a Euclid Avenue beauty salon before charging 39-year-old Monica E. Allen, 114 Brookline Ave., Youngstown, with felonious assault after a co-worker alleged Allen had used a pair of styling scissors to stab her in the shoulder area and right hand during a struggle. Allen had blood on her face and admitted the crime during a traffic stop, police said. The accuser sought treatment at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center in Youngstown.
Drugs: Richard A. Harris, 26, of 120 Elruth Court and Joseph D. Sosna, 22, of 447 Indiana Ave. faced charges of receiving stolen property as well as possession of drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia after police stopped the two Girard men near Trumbull Avenue. Hypodermic needles and two syringes were found in the vehicle, on which was a stolen license plate, authorities said.
Unauthorized use of a vehicle: A Mansell Drive woman said a girl, 16, took her 2000 Chevrolet Impala without permission.
Drugs: Police on Colonial Drive pulled over Khaleb Y. Bonner of 2930 Biscayne Drive, Liberty, and charged the 23-year-old man with drug abuse after alleging Bonner, who also was wanted on a warrant from Warren, removed 4.5 grams of suspected marijuana from his pocket.
Aug. 5
Breaking and entering: Someone broke into a residence in the 100 block of Laurel Avenue and removed about $1,200 worth of copper piping, though police found no signs of forced entry.
Criminal damaging: A wooden door frame to an apartment in the 1400 block of Townsend Avenue sustained $100 in damage.
