YOUNGSTOWN

Five candidates are vying for three seats on the Youngstown Board of Education — and none is an incumbent.

Candidates for nonpartisan positions on the Nov. 5 general-election ballot had to file nominating petitions with their county’s board of elections by Wednesday.

The three Youngstown school board incumbents — Lock P. Beachum Sr., a 16-year member, along with Rachel I. Hanni and Andrea Mahone, both finishing their first terms — opted not to seek re-election.

Youngstown is the only school district in Mahoning County to not have an incumbent file for re-election this year.

But some have only one incumbent seeking re-election.

In Sebring, 10 candidates are running for three seats: two are for full four-year terms and one is for an unexpired two-year term. The o nly incumbent for those seats is Cindy Christani, appointed to the unexpired term.

In Canfield and Lowellville, there are three candidates for three school-board positions with one incumbent in each race.

It’s wide open in the Austintown school board race with 10 candidates, including two incumbents and two former members, running for three seats.

The elections board must certify the validity of all candidates’ petitions before they can appear on the ballot.

There are competitive trustee races in 11 of the county’s 14 townships. Only candidates, who happen to be incumbents, in Coitsville, Green and Milton are running unopposed.

The most trustee candidates in a county township is Springfield with six, including a pair of incumbents, running for two seats.

There are five candidates running for two trustee seats in Austintown, Canfield and Ellsworth.

The last person to file Wednesday at the county board of elections was Ronald G. McDonald for a seat on the Sebring school board.

Among the more-interesting candidates to file is Bernard J. Kosar Sr., father of former pro football quarterback, Bernie Kosar Jr., for Canfield mayor. The older Kosar is the only candidate to file for that city’s mayoral position.
