Canfield advances to Junior League World Series

AKRON — Maddy Johns singled in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Amelia Manenti with the winning run as Canfield captured the Junior League Central Region title, defeating South Portage (Michigan), 2-1 at Firestone Stadium.

The victory earned Canfield a berth in the Junior League World Series that begins Sunday in Kirkland, Wash. Canfield is the first Mahoning Valley 13-14-year-old softball team to qualify for the World Series since Boardman in 2007. Poland’s 11-12 softball team went to the Little League World Series in 2010.

Kayla Troxil was the winning pitcher, allowing no runs in four innings on the mound. Bridget Sweeney scored Canfield’s other run, in the third inning.
