Kennel dedication

HOWLAND

Trumbull County commissioners will have a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. today for the new exercise area at the county dog kennel, 7501 Anderson Ave.

Gwen Logan, county executive dog warden, asked commissioners in December for several thousand dollars to fence an area next to the kennel to give especially active dogs exercise to improve their behavior and help them get adopted.

Man threatens former friend with handgun

YOUNGSTOWN

Police arrested a 61-year-old city man for threatening a former friend with an unloaded handgun shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a police report, Steve Jenkins pulled a handgun from a hip holster and threatened to kill the man and his wife during an argument over an unpaid $50 loan.

The incident took place outside a Portland Avenue home on the West Side.

Jenkins, who has a concealed-carry permit, is charged with aggravated menacing.

Officers located the gun’s magazine, containing five rounds, in Jenkins’ car.

Resident required to register as arsonist

WARREN

John Smith, 50, is the first person in Trumbull County required to register with the sheriff’s office as a convicted arsonist.

Smith was sentenced in February to two years in prison for setting the house on Idylwild Street Northeast on fire where he lived with his girlfriend and her four children Aug. 6, 2012. No injuries resulted.

Gabe Wildman, an assistant county prosecutor, said the law was intended to help law enforcement determine whether a convicted arsonist lives near any suspicious fires.

It is patterned after the state’s sex-offender registry, but it doesn’t have the notification provisions that the sex-offender registry has, Wildman said.

The law took effect July 31.

Amnesty programs

WARREN

The Trumbull County Child Support Enforcement Agency will offer amnesty programs throughout August for individuals behind on child-support payments.

Anyone whose driver’s license was suspended by CSEA can request reinstatement in return for one month’s payment of child-support obligations plus $1.

Amnesty is also being offered for warrants on contempt of court for those who have failed to appear for a child-support hearing or who have failed to report to jail to serve a child-support contempt sentence.

CSEA will withdraw its warrant if the person makes a 1-month payment plus $1.

One-car accident

YOUNGSTOWN

A Florida woman was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after a one-car accident just after 8 p.m. Monday on the Madison Avenue Expressway.

Witnesses told police an SUV driven by April Asayag, 41, was on the expressway near the Fifth Avenue exit when the SUV swerved off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail and flipped on its side. Asayag was lying on the pavement when an officer arrived, reports said.

Although Asayag was not cited, it was not clear from reports what may have caused the accident.
