The doctor of a 14-year-old Ohio girl who had cerebral palsy and weighed 28 pounds when she died has been sentenced to six months in jail and a year’s probation on three counts of failing to report child abuse or neglect.

Montgomery County’s prosecutor says 51-year-old Margaret Edwards was sentenced Tuesday in Dayton. The Trotwood resident had pleaded no contest to the charges in patient Makayla Norman’s 2011 death and permanently surrendered her medical license. She faced a possible sentence of up to 18 months.

Messages were left for Edwards’ attorney.

Norman died from nutritional and medical neglect complicated by her chronic condition.

Norman’s mother and a nurse were convicted of involuntary manslaughter and other charges. Two other nurses were convicted of failing to provide for a functionally impaired person.
