Military-academy applications

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, is encouraging Ohio high-school students to seek nomination from his office to U.S. military service academies for 2014 admission no later than Sept. 25.
Each year, Brown nominates up to 10 students for each service academy: Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Military Academy at West Point, and Merchant Marine Academy.
Nominees must be at least 17 but not yet 23 as of July 1, 2014, except for the Merchant Marine, for which the maximum age is 25.

5K race, 1-mile walk in Warren
WARREN
The Rallying for Recovery 5K race and 1-mile fun walk are Sept. 21 on Courthouse Square. The fun walk begins at 8:45 a.m.; the race starts at 9 a.m.; a kid’s dash will take place after the 5K race.
Deadline for pre-registration is Sept. 15, but same-day registration is available. Entry fee is $15 before Sept. 15 and $18 after. All runners receive a free T-shirt. Walkers may purchase a shirt for $10.
Free food, entertainment and information about recovery from drug and alcohol abuse will be available. All kids participating in the dash will receive a medal.
Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers overall and to the top three finishers in each age group. Registration forms are available at www.trumbullmhrb.org. For information, call Don Hyde at 330-240-3750.
Kids programs in Mercer County
MERCER, PA.
Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road, has teamed with the Mercer County Conservation District to host informational programs for children age 5 to 8 throughout the summer.
During a “Getting Primitive: Basics to Weaving Cattail Placemats” class, Lynn Croskey will teach students how to weave with primitive materials. Students will learn about the wetlands and weave their own cattail placemat.
The class will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 14 at the farm. The program is appropriate for ages 6 to 8. So organizers can prepare materials, registration is required by Aug. 12. Cost is $5.
