The Avalon Golf and Country Club junior tennis team finished eighth out of nine teams in the 14-and under advanced division at Saturday’s United States Tennis Association Midwest Regional.

One of the largest junior tennis tournaments in the country, the event featured the top club teams from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio.

Kaytlin Marlatt, of Warren, was victorious in doubles matches with partners Isabella Elisco and Hermitage native Devin Gramley over Port Huron, Mich., and Chagrin Valley (Ohio) Athletic Club, respectively. Marlatt, 12, was one of the youngest players in the tournament.

Elisco, 14, and 13 year-old Jason Khavari, both Howland natives, partnered to win a mixed doubles match 8-2 over Chagrin Valley. Elisco also teamed up with Canfield’s Garret Kuchmaner, 14, in an 8-5 win over CV.

The eight-player team practices year-round on the outdoor clay courts and inside the tennis dome at Avalon’s Squaw Creek tennis facility. They are coached by former YSU tennis team captain Brian Fry.
