YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown native and Kennedy Catholic High graduate Kyle Randall will continue his professional basketball career in Europe, according to MLive.com.

Randall played in three games for the Sacramento Kings’ summer league, scoring five points with five rebounds and seven assists in 33 minutes. He led the Mid-American Conference at Central Michigan in scoring last season with 18.3 points per game after three seasons at UNC-Greensboro.

“The journey to the NBA is still going,” Randall told the site. “I’m going to play overseas this coming season, then I’ll do the NBA summer league again next summer and start that process again.”

Local youth swimmer advances to zone meet

Mikel Flatley of the Penguin Swim Team qualified for this weekend’s Central Zone championship meet at the Spire Institute in Geneva.

Flatley qualified second in the 11-12 girls 100-meter breaststroke at the Lake Erie Swimming Long Course championship.

Other Penguin Swim Team competitors who placed: Flatley, third in the 50 breast, sixth in the 50 fly, ninth in the 100 fly; Aimee Gysegem, second 200 fly, fourth 100 fly, fifth 200 back, seventh 200 free, eighth 400 free; and Sarah Gonda, sixth 200 back.

Heat to sign Greg Oden

A person familiar with the situation says Greg Oden has told the Miami Heat that he will accept their contract offer.

Oden has informed the Heat of his decision and is expected to formally sign in the coming days, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Friday night because no contract has been signed. It ends months of suspense that saw several NBA teams line up for a chance to sign the former No. 1 pick whose career has been derailed by a series of knee problems.

Artemis taking ’baby steps’ at America’s Cup

Each time Sweden’s Artemis Racing has practiced on the bay over the past few days, sounds of cheers rise up from their America’s Cup opponents sailing by.

It’s a sign of the emotional pull all the competitors feel for the beleaguered team, which is only now staging a valiant comeback after one of its crewmen was killed during a capsize in May.

“We have great support from these guys when we get out there,” Artemis skipper Iain Percy said during a news conference.

Froome to ride in USA Pro Challenge race

ASPEN, Colo.

The team of 2013 Tour de France winner Christian Froome says the cyclist will take part in the USA Pro Challenge in Colorado.

Team Sky said on its website Friday that the Briton would compete in the 2013 USA Pro Challenge.

Organizers of the Colorado stage race had said in June that Team Sky would participate, but it wasn’t known whether Froome would come along.

The race gets started in Aspen and Snowmass Village on Aug. 19 and ends in Denver on Aug. 25.

Rio organizers may need $700M more

RIO DE JANEIRO

Olympic organizers say they may have to use $700 million in government money to meet the operating budget for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Leo Gryner, chief operating officer of the organizing committee, said Friday that as conditions now stand “we need this $700 million.”

Gryner told The Associated Press earlier this week the operating budget could be as much as $4 billion.
