1-day deluge put Valley in Top 5 list of wettest Julys

Despite only two days last month with rain accumulations of more than an inch in the Mahoning Valley, it was the fifth-wettest July on record.
Of the 7.45 inches of rain recorded by the National Weather Service for the area, 3.96 inches fell July 10.
“That’s unusual,” Martin Thompson, a hydrometeorological technician with the NWS in Cleveland, said about one day playing such a factor in the large accumulation of rain for July.
The only other day with at least an inch of rain was July 20 with 1.35 inches.
Overall, there were 25 days last month with no rain accumulation to less than 0.2 of an inch.
Yet it was the fifth-wettest July in the Valley, according to the National Weather Service, which has weather statistics for the area going back to 1897.
The most rainfall for July occurred in 2003 with 10.4 inches.
The average rainfall for the area in July is 3.88 inches.
The NWS tracks weather conditions for the area at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna. Other parts of the area had more or less rainfall last month.
Despite the high temperature reaching only 78 degrees between July 24 and 31, the average temperature was a little above normal for the month.
The average temperature here in July is 70.7 degrees. The average last month was 71.4 degrees.
The intense heat of July 15-19, with high temperatures between 89 and 91 degrees, is why the month ended slightly above normal, Thompson said.
“Without those five days, we’d be below normal for temperature” for July, he said.
The high temperatures we had in mid-July aren’t likely to return.
The forecast for the first two weeks of August calls for below-normal temperatures, Thompson said. Also, the Valley could see above-average amounts of rain, he said.
“Season-wise, it’s summer, but temperature-wise, it doesn’t reflect that,” Thompson said.
