City council will consider park and rec purchases
YOUNGSTOWN
City council will consider legislation Wednesday permitting the board of control to enter into contracts to buy about $225,000 worth of equipment for the park and recreation department, and for a new South Side park.
Council voted last month to include the various capital improvements to the department in the city’s general-fund budget.
If the legislation is approved, the board of control would be authorized to seek proposals:
To spend up to $100,000 for the new Glenwood Park’s pavilion, fencing and sidewalks as well as level, seed and add topsoil to the location at Glenwood Avenue, near Sheridan Road. That South Side neighborhood’s Fosterville Park closed two years ago and was replaced by a Bottom Dollar Food grocery store.
The new park should be done by this summer, said Robert Burke, the city’s park and recreation director.
The city is paying $120,000 for the park costs, with Bottom Dollar providing $30,000 and PNC Bank contributing $20,000.
The city already has spent about $42,000 for playground equipment for the new park, and will have other, smaller expenses there, Burke said.
To spend up to $60,000 for a new maintenance truck.
The department currently uses a pickup truck with tools “thrown in the back,” Burke said. “It’s not a very productive way to haul equipment.”
To enter into a five-year lease-to-own deal, at an annual cost of $10,500, for a “rough” mower for the city-owned Henry Stambaugh Golf Course.
To purchase a specialized lawn mower for up to $15,000 to take care of grass at city parks.
