Contract approval ends school strike in Strongsville district

STRONGSVILLE

Teachers and a suburban Cleveland school board have approved a contract, ending an eight-week strike by teachers.

The Plain Dealer reports that the Strongsville City Schools board on Sunday unanimously approved the contract that teachers ratified Saturday.

The strike was primarily over salary and working conditions in the district of about 6,200 students. The president of the union said its 383 members overwhelmingly ratified the contract.

Presidents of the school board and union say the goal now is to bring the district and community back together.

Parents and students had pushed to end the walkout, with some staging demonstrations at school board headquarters.

Contract provisions include restoring raises frozen in the 2011-12 school year and teachers agreeing to pay more their health insurance.
