BROOKFIELD

As part of a fundraising effort for the Strimbu Memorial Fund, the 24th Annual Strimbu Barbecue will take place May 8 at the Yankee Lake Ballroom.

Since it began in 1990, the fund has provided millions of dollars in donations and scholarships. The fund also supports local economic development and many charitable organizations.

The scholarships and grants receive 99 percent of the proceeds.

The fund awards $1,000 leadership scholarships to qualified high school seniors in 13 local school districts, and an additional $10,000 to the overall leader.

The event draws a sellout crowd of 1,600 annually and is reminiscent of a full-scale Texas barbecue. The party will begin at 5 p.m.

The event will feature a variety of appetizers plus beef, turkey, duck, pig, ox, fish and lamb served straight from the spit.

There will be silent and live auctions featuring such items as utility vehicles, travel packages, Lake Erie walleye fishing trips, sporting event tickets and jewelry.

Pipe Dreams, playing music from the mid-’60s, and the Fab 4 will entertain.

Tickets are available for $90 by calling Connie Schenker at 724-704-7115, or John Holliday at 724-699-8869.
