The Warren Community Development department is offering two seminars to aid local nonprofit groups that hope to receive funding from the Community Development Block Grant in 2014.

Nonprofit organizations serving the city, especially those serving low- and moderate-income populations, are invited to apply. Applications for funding will be accepted until July 31.

The seminars will take place in the Community Services Building, 418 Main Avenue SW, at 9 a.m. Wednesday and at 2 p.m. Friday.

Training workshops

The Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corp. has announced three training workshops for businesses interested in selling their products or services to the federal government.

The workshops are free and open to any interested businesses.

Dates are: May 14 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the MVEDC office, 4319 Belmont Avenue, Youngstown; May 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Carnegie Public Library, 219 Fourth St., East Liverpool; and May 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, Main branch, 444 Mahoning Avenue NW, Warren.

KTSDI receives NASA contract

KTSDI, a vehicle-solutions provider that serves large companies such as Caterpillar, Terex and Mack, has been awarded a significant contract from NASA to work on the agency’s Balloon Launch Program.

Since the decommissioningSFlbof its space-shuttle program,SFlbNASA has used larger helium balloons to launch payloads up to 20,000 pounds. The balloons are up to 100 times the size of the largest Goodyear Blimp.

KTSDI has been selected to provide components, steering, engineering and system support for the Balloon Launch Program.

FAA grant to fund airport upgrades

A Federal Aviation Administration grant of more than $20 million will finance runway safety improvements at a Cleveland airport.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, says the FAA grant to Burke Lakefront Airport was announced last week by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Burke will use the grant to move the end of one runway 600 feet to the east.

It also will construct a 400-foot bed of collapsible concrete at the end of another runway to slow or stop planes that can’t stop on their own.

An FAA spokesman says the work needed to comply with new runway safety standards is scheduled to be completed at the airport alongside Lake Erie by 2014.
