Building at Babcock Lumber in Hubbard destroyed by fire

A Saturday morning fire that destroyed a building at Babcock Lumber, 6472 Mount Everett Road SE was separate from a Friday fire at the same building, and not a rekindling of Friday’s blaze, according to Ron Stanish, chief of the Eagle Joint Fire District.

“This is a totally different fire,” Stanish said, adding that Friday’s blaze was completely extinguished by firefighters.

The state fire marshal lists the cause of the 4:17 a.m. Saturday blaze in Hubbard Township as undetermined, and Stanish said firefighters will return to the fire scene Monday morning to investigate further.

Saturday’s blaze was reported by a Hubbard Township police officer, who said he saw flames and that the roof of the building appeared to be near collapse.

Nobody was injured in either blaze.

At Saturday’s blaze, Hubbard firefighters were assisted by Coitsville, Liberty, Brookfield, Youngstown Air Reserve Station, West Middlesex and Shenango Township firefighters.

Friday’s 9:30 a.m. blaze was likely caused by a light above the company’s dust collection system, which ignited the ceiling, Stanish said.

That fire was contained to the dust collection and compressor areas and caused $10,000 to $15,000 damage.
