Medical society alliance names Gem of the Year

The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance honored Linda Dohar Awad of Canfield as its Gem of the Year at a joint dinner meeting with the medical society April 19 at Cassese’s MVR Restaurant.

The award goes to a member who serves the alliance and the community with distinction.

Awad has belonged to the alliance for 30 years and has served on the board and as president of the alliance for the 2001-02 year.

Awad earned a bachelor’s degree in speech and telecommunications from Youngstown State University. She was associate producer of Dan Ryan’s “Town Hall” PBS TV series and associate producer and news reporter of the news magazine show “Final Edition” on PBS. She also has been a medical practice manager for 30 years.

She has participated as a judge and coach on the local, state and national levels with the Ohio High School Speech League.

Involved with St. Maron Church, she is past president of the Mount Lebanon Society and chaired the 75th anniversary celebration of the church.

She co-authored a book, “Immigrations Past and Present and Their Descendants,” in 1987. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution’s permanent collection. Awad is in the process of writing a book about the Maronite community for the church’s 100th anniversary. She has taught Maronite Christian Formation for 20 years.

She and her husband, Dr. Mounir Awad, live in Canfield and have four children: Dr. Marie Awad-Alexander (Atty. Louis Alexander); Dr. Diana Awad Scrocco (Dr. John David Scrocco); Jeanine; and Michele.
