The Youngstown State men’s golf team is in sixth place with a 312 at the Horizon League championships at the Mission Inn Resort.

Bryan Yeo led YSU with a 76, followed by Bill Gaffney (77), Mark Olbrych (79), D.J. Holub (80) and Brandon Pluchinsky (81).

Yeo had one birdie (No. 6), five bogeys and 12 pars to open the tournament. On the back nine, he had bogeys at 12 and 15, but the other seven holes were all pars.

YSU is in sixth place, five shots in front of Wright State.

Loyola leads with a 299, Cleveland State is second at 300 and Valpraiso is third at 301.

Mitzel keys Penguins

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Youngstown State women’s golf team opened the Horizon League championships on Friday with a round of 321.

The Penguins are tied for third with Valparaiso, nine shots off co-leaders Detroit and Cleveland State.

Loyola sits fifth at 327, Green Bay is sixth at 331 and UIC is seventh at 338.

Allison Mitzel (Poland High) of YSU is tied for fourth place with a 77. Mitzel had two birdies and 10 pars to offset a double bogey and five bogeys for her five-over-par total. She birdied No. 5 and No. 18, both par fives. She had a solid final 10 holes going two-over-par during that stretch.

YSU tennis falls 4-2

Indianapolis, Ind.

Detroit defeated the third-seeded Youngstown State men’s tennis team 4-2 on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Horizon League tennis championships.

YSU (12-9) lost the doubles point and faced the situation of having to win four singles from the Titans (9-13).

The Titans took the doubles point behind an 8-6 win at No. 1 shortly after claiming an 8-3 victory at No. 2.

Paula de Man selected

Indianapolis, Ind.

The Youngstown State women’s program had three first-team all-league selections, highlighted by Player and Newcomer of the Year Paula de Man the league announced on Friday.

Joining de Man on the Horizon League all-conference squad were junior Margarita Sadovnikova and sophomore Marta Burak.

It was the third time Sadovnikova was named to the league’s first-team squad.

Burak was the 2011-12 HL Newcomer of the Year giving the Penguins back-to-back recipients in that category.

de Man went through Horizon League play with a 7-0 mark at No. 1 singles.

Penguin pair picked

Indianapolis, Ind.

Youngstown State sophomore Silviu Mistreanu and junior Sebastian Hagn were named All-Horizon League while Hagn was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year at the Tennis Awards banquet on Friday.

Mistreanu is the first Penguin in school history to be a two-time first-team All-Horizon League selection.

This year he was 5-1 in Horizon League play at the No. 1 spot. Overall at No. 1 singles this spring, Mistreanu was 11-6.

Hagn played primarily at the No. 2 spot in the Penguins’ dual lineup this spring. In Horizon League play he was 3-3 while posting a 10-10 dual mark.

Correction

Stephan Elash singled and doubled for the Campbell High baseball team in Thursday’s 7-4 loss to Girard. His name was misspelled in Friday’s edition.

NFL draft’s 1st round gets 7.7 million viewers

NEW YORK

The first round of the NFL draft averaged 7.7 million viewers on ESPN and the NFL Network, drawing the third-highest audience for the opening round.

This year’s numbers trailed only the 8.3 million in 2010 and 8.1 million last year.

NFL Network’s coverage drew an average of 1.5 million viewers — a 7 percent increase over last year. The NFL also said Friday the first round drew nearly double the viewership of second-most watched show on cable.
