The Salvation Army of Mahoning County will present an inspirational concert of praise by the Pendel Brass and Singers of the Salvation Army at 7 p.m. Friday at Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 2432 S. Raccoon Road.

The concert is free with no tickets required. A free-will offering will be taken.

The Pendel Brass and Singers, led by Dr. Harold Burgmayer, are a group of musicians from eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. The group, which performs a variety of marches, hymns and classical selections, travels outside of the Pendel Division each year for performances.

The performance will be prior to the Salvation Army of Mahoning County’s 2013 annual civic dinner May 15 at the Lake Club, 1140 Paulin Road, Poland. The event, which honors local individuals and organizations for outstanding commitment to service in Valley, is in conjunction with National Salvation Army Week, May 12-18.

St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, 97 W. Washington St., will sponsor a Mother’s Day luncheon at 2 p.m. May 12 at St. Mark Orthodox Church banquet hall, 3560 Logan Way, Liberty. Evelyn Burton will be guest speaker.

Crossing Paths

Crossing Paths local TV ministry, founded by Donald G. Reed Sr., will have its annual spring banquet at 6 p.m. May 10 at the Brentford House, 737 Myron St.

Guest speaker will be former pro-football player Ron Kosar, who played for the New England Patriots and Detroit Lions. He is now pastor of New Life Community Church in DeVry, Pa.

This banquet is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Call 724-981-7777, 724-342-9632 or 724-813-6846. No one younger than 16 may attend.

Sponsors also are sought to help defray expenses. Table sponsorship is $100 for a table of eight. Reservations are due by Thursday.

For high school football players and coaches, the ministry will host a “Ask the Pro” meeting at 10 a.m. May 11 at the Chapel of Jubilee, New Castle, Pa. The event is by reservation only and seating is limited.

Special Masses

The Office of Pro-Life, Marriage and Family Life of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor two wedding anniversary celebrations to honor couples who are observing their 25th, 40th, 50th or more anniversaries in 2013. Couples may register for the celebration that is most convenient for them.

The first celebration will take place at 2 p.m. June 2 in St. Columba Cathedral. Couples planning to attend the June celebration should register at their parish by May 10.

The second celebration will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at St. John the Baptist Parish in Canton. Registrations will be accepted in August and September for this event.

Both celebrations will include Mass celebrated by Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown, renewal of marriage vows, a personalized certificate for each couple, an opportunity to greet Bishop Murry, and a reception for the couples and their families.

For registration and information, couples must contact their own parish office.

Sheikh Yusuf Estes, an American Muslim preacher and teacher, will speak at 5:30 p.m. today at Masjid Al-Khair, 1670 Homewood Ave.

Sheikh Yusuf, born in Ohio, converted from Christianity to Islam in 1991. He was a Muslim delegate to the United Nations World Peace Conference for Religious Leaders in September 2000. He is active in Islamic missionary work in the U.S. and around the world.

Sheikh Yusuf has started a free-to-air Internet and satellite TV channel called GUIDE US TV, which currently broadcasts programming on Islam 24/7.

Studies North

Jewish/Christian Studies/North is focusing on sickness, healing and the family in Jewish, Christian, Islam, Hindu and Bahai traditions. Dr. Mustansir Mir of Islamic studies at Youngstown State University will address the topic Wednesday at Temple El Emeth, 3970 Logan Way.

The group gathers at 12:30 p.m. and the study starts at 1.

First Friday

The Rev. Dr. James Daprile will be guest speaker at the Thursday meeting of First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown at Antone’s Banquet Centre, Market Street.

His topic will be “Spirituality Today: Reflections on the Journey for the Journey.” Father Daprile is pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Aurora.

The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $15.

Spring series

The St. John Academy of Historic Lutheran Church of St. John, 1429 Mahoning Ave., will sponsor a spring series on issues of the Christian faith starting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Colonial Hall of the church. Other sessions will be May 8, 15 and 22.

The ecumenical study will be followed by chapel Eucharist at 12:05 p.m.
