Union Elementary School hosted a fundraising dinner with the help of the local Outback Steakhouse at McKinley Elementary School April 12. The event offered a complete steak dinner, cooked on the grill outside by Boardman Outback owner James Ferrell.

“Mr. Masucci approached me with the event because he knew we were looking for ways to get more involved in the community and we wanted to reach out to the community so we agreed,” said Farrell. “We are so thankful to be able to do this kind of stuff. To be able to be in the position to do this is great and we are so happy to be giving back.”

Patrons of the fundraiser were happy to be able to give back to the school as well.

“This is an excellent fundraiser. It’s very well-organized and the price is extremely reasonable,” said Alexis Quinones, a parent that came to support the fundraiser. “It really is great. The food is delicious and it was ready for people to come and get it. People go out to get a steak dinner all the time, we are just supporting the school at the same time.”

More than 300 people bought tickets to the fundraiser. All of the proceeds given to Union will go back into the school to upgrade the school amplification system. This will allow better communication between rooms in the school and promote the safety of Union students.

“I am very grateful to all the people who support Union, especially Outback,” said Union principal Mike Masucci. “All it took was one phone call and they were in. I think it speaks volumes about an organization when even the owner comes out to help.”
