Technicians from Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Safe Kids Mahoning Valley will provide a free car-seat check between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the hospital’s Beeghly Campus, Building C parking lot, 6505 Market St.

Child restraints and seat belts, when installed and used properly, can prevent injuries and save lives, said Gia Ramsey, injury- prevention specialist at Akron Children’s. Technicians will be available to discuss seat-use guidelines and provide literature.

Campaign stop

AUSTINTOWN

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, a 2014 Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will campaign at 12:15 p.m. today at the Sportsman’s Barber Shop at 15 N. Wickliffe Circle. FitzGerald will meet with the shop’s owner, Dominic Lewis, and local supporters.

FitzGerald announced Wednesday that he was running for governor next year.

OSHP probes crash

CARROLLTON

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle accident that killed a Poland man in Carroll County Tuesday afternoon.

James C. Masterson, 54, of Thalia Avenue, Poland, was driving a Freightliner tractor-trailer truck southbound on state Route 9 in Lee Township at 5:24 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve, lost control and went off the side of the road, overturning the truck.

Spring cleanup

The village will conduct its annual spring cleanup from May 6 through 17. Only brush and bagged leaves will be picked up and should be placed on the front curb. Mixed piles of leaves and brush will not be picked up. Brush must be cut in lengths no more than 4 feet and stacked in the same direction.
