Middle schools present band concert

The Boardman Middle Schools will present a fifth, sixth and seventh-grade band spring concert on May 29 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.

This concert will feature the fifth, sixth and seventh-grade bands combined from both Center and Glenwood middle schools.

The fifth-grade band portion will include many fun arrangements, including a performance of “Hang on Sloopy” our state of Ohio’s official rock song!

The sixth-grade band will feature popular favorites including “Party Rock Anthem” and “Rolling in the Deep” as recorded by Adele.

The concert will close with the seventh-grade band performance of the recent hits “Eyes Open” by Taylor Swift and “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera.

Donations of $3 for adults and $2 for students will be accepted at the door. Senior citizens and children under 10 are free.

Spring band concert set

The Boardman Middle Schools will present a spring band concert on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center featuring our jazz ensembles and eighth-grade concert band.

All groups featured combine students from both Glenwood and Center Middle School.

The concert will close with the eighth-grade band performance of recent hits including “Gangnam Style” as recorded by PSY and “Grenade” by Bruno Mars. A difficult arrangement of “The Grand Old Duke of York” demonstrates our students’ hard work and dedication to our band program.

Donations of accepted $3 for adults and $2 for students will be accepted at the door. Senior citizens and children under 10 Free.

Ursuline Sisters accepting applications

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown are accepting applications for their June 2013 intern/volunteer program. College students or recent graduates 18 and older with a few hours a week to spare and a sincere desire to make a difference in the community are encouraged to apply.

Interns and volunteers really make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate while gaining valuable workplace experience to build their r sum s, having fun, meeting new people and visiting diverse places. Hours are flexible, and participants can extend their experiences beyond June.

Baby sitting class set May 4

The Boardman Park will sponsor a baby-sitting class on May 4 at New Life Assembly of God Church on North Lima Road. The class will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is for 11-15-year-olds. Cost is $40 for Boardman Township residents and $50 for non-residents. Students will learn baby-sitting basic skills, first aid, rescue breathing and more. Students need to provide their own lunch.

BCMS students take first in program

Maria Serra, eighth-grader at Boardman Center Middle School, placed first in photography in “The Magic of the Moment” program. More than 16,000 students participated in the Ohio PTA-sponsored program. Categories included visual arts and photography, music composition, literature, dance choreography and video film production.

Show what you know: spinning the wool

The Boardman library will host a wool spinning class on May 16 at 7 p.m. Adults are invited to come a learn how to make yarn.

Jigsaw puzzle swap

If you are done with your jigsaw puzzle and want to try another, join other jigsaw enthusiasts and swap puzzles at the Boardman library on May 8 at 5 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Give blood at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Boardman library on April 22 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Screen your blood pressure

The Boardman library will host a blood pressure screening on May 6 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Sponsored by the Mahoning Chapter of American Red Cross.

TAB meeting set

Check out the monthly TAB (Teen Advisory Board) meeting May 1 at 6:30 p.m. They meet the first Wednesday of the month at the Boardman library. Newcomers are always welcome. For teens in grades 7-12.

Children of all ages and parents are invited to join the Boardman library for stories and fun in this 30-minute story time on May 29 at 10 a.m. Crawl through the tunnels and try the paper and pencil mazes. For children of all ages.

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on May 25 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. The program will include books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Friends of the library meeting set

The Boardman Friends of the Library will host their meeting a presentation on May 13 at 10 a.m. The presentation “ Northeastern Ohio’s Involvement in the Civil War” will be presented by Chris Craft, director of the Massillon Museum.

BHS accepts scholarship applications

Applications for the George Brownlee Scholarship are now available in the Boardman High School guidance office. The scholarship was created to recognize student-athletes who demonstrate the character of George Brownlee.

Candidates are Boardman High School students seniors who have participated in two or more sports and who exhibit leadership, enthusiasm, friendship, team spirit, industriousness and humility. These characteristics were evident in Brownlee’s life.

The funding of the scholarship is by the sale of engraved bricks to complete the BHS sports complex walkway. The bricks will permanently recognize the contributor. The selection committee asked that applications be returned by May 3. The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded at the May 22 senior assembly.

YSU scholarship applications available

Applications for scholarships to Youngstown State University by the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest are now available by contacting Deborah Mottle at 330-729-0355. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University in order to be eligible. Deadline for applicants is June 1.

Teen driving school set

Tire Rack Street Survival will host a teen driving school on May 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Value City Department Store, 1128 Boardman-Poland Road. The program is open to licensed and permitted drivers ages 15-21. Cost is $75 per student.

Students will learn emergency breaking, skid control, how to control unintended over-steer and under-steer and how to avoid accidents. Students will be taught in their own car, not specially-prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be translated to their daily driving experiences.

Easter Seals hosts 5K

Easter Seals will host its ninth annual 5K run/ one-mile walk today at Boardman Park. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Elton Beard Cabin and the walk and run will start at 9:30 a.m. Registration cost is $15 per person; children 12 and under are free. Participants who raise $25 and above will receive an official walk T-shirt.

Trash and treasure sale

Boardman United Methodist Church will host their trash and treasure sale on May 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee and donuts will be available. Thursday is bargain-bag day. The church is located at 6809 Market St.

Mommy and Me Tea May 5

The Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion Show will be May 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park. Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion Show is a semiformal tea for girls 3-8 and their mom, grandma or other adult. Enjoy an afternoon tea with cookies and finger foods. The girls will model their own special outfit of the day and have a professional photographer take a photo for a keepsake.

Tickets are now on sale at the park office. Boardman residents are $14 per couple, non-residents are $16. Additional guests are $6. No tickets will be sold at the door.

5K walk set in Austintown

Friends of Fido of the Mahoning County Dog Pound is hosting its first 5K/one mile walk on May 4 at Austintown Township Park. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and the race is at 6:30 p.m., with the mile start to follow. Pre-registration is $16 and is available online at www.imathlete.com. Cost the day of the race is $20.

AWBA to host Chinese auction

The annual Chinese auction for the Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will be held at the Ursuline Center at 4280 Shields Road tomorrow from 12:30 to 4 p.m.. The doors will open at 12:30 and the drawing will begin at 3 p.m. Ticket holders will have free refreshments and food and drink will be provided.

The donation for a ticket is $5 and you can purchase a ticket at the door or call Judy Codespote at 330-502-9413 for tickets prior to the event. There will be gifts for children, men and women and special raffles of items greater than $25 in value.

All proceeds will benefit the education fund. Presently, the chapter is sponsoring four students attending schools such as Youngstown State, Kent State and John Carroll University.

Benefit golf outing to be July 20

The eighth annual sunshine benefit golf outing will be held on July 20 at Lakeside Golf Course. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and shotgun start at 9 a.m. The event will be a three-person scramble. The cost is $225 per team and includes a T-shirt, continental breakfast, lunch, drinks and a steak dinner to follow at Ball Busters Sports Bar.

Registration begins at 2 p.m. and first bag toss is at 3 p.m. The cost is $40 per team and includes a hot dog lunch. The tournament will include double elimination, 50/50 and a raffle. Community group calls for scholarship applicants

The Boardman Community Foundation (BCF), a component fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, is asking for applications to be submitted for the 2013 scholarship selection process. The fund is offering two $1,750 scholarships for students who are high school seniors and Boardman residents. Print the application for the scholarship from the foundation’s website at www.cfmv.org, or contact the foundation at 330-743-5555. The deadline for applying is March 31. Students selected will be notified in April.
