Horizon League tabs YSU golfer Holub

Youngstown State redshirt freshman D.J. Holub was named Horizon League men’s golfer of the week.
Holub had the best finish of his career this past weekend at the Rutherford Intercollegiate. He got better every round, shooting an opening round 76, followed by a 73 and a 72. He finished in a tie for fourth out of a 75-person field that featured teams from Minnesota, Penn State, Maryland, Connecticut, Seton Hall and Rutgers among others.
YSU’s de Man earns weekly tennis honor
INDIANAPOLIS
Youngstown State sophomore Paula de Man was named the Horizon League women’s tennis player of the week for the second straight week and third time this season.
de Man won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles against Wright State in Youngstown State’s only match this week. She also teamed with Lauren Hankle for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
The sophomore improved to 7-0 in Horizon League singles play, winning her 14th consecutive match. As a team, YSU’s 14 wins is the most for the Penguins since 2004-05.
Local gymnasts earn berths at Nationals
Anna Warhol of Poland and Rachel Gurgiolo of Edinburg, Pa., qualified to the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Nationals scheduled May 3-5 at Battle Creek, Mich. Warhol, an eighth-grader at Boardman Glenwood Middle School, finished second all-around in her age group last weekend at regional competition in Lansing, Mich. Gurgiolo, a freshman at Mohawk High, was third all-around in her age group.
The two, both of whom won the floor exercise event at the regional, train at Youngstown Gymnastics Center under the instruction of Sandy Sabo and Chad Cleland.
Jamie Sklenar, 14, of Canfield placed 16th all-around in her age group at regional. All three regional qualifiers had advanced through state meets at the end of March.
South Range close to hiring Cullen
BEAVER TOWNSHIP
Longtime Canfield coach John Cullen is expected to be the next boys basketball head coach at South Range, according to a report from WKBN.
Cullen spent the last three years as the director of women’s basketball operations at Youngstown State. He went 433-186 in 28 seasons at Canfield.
Cullen would replace Dave Purins, who stepped down after this season. Purins went 80-72 in seven seasons with the Raiders.
Steeler receiver slated for appearance at mall
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown is scheduled to appear for an autograph session Saturday at the Southern Park Mall.
Brown, who had 66 receptions including five for touchdowns in 2012, will be signing autographs from 1 to 3 p.m. Pricing for autographs starts at $25 to $40. Photos will be on sale at the event.
New system’s name: College Football Playoff
PASADENA, Calif.
The Bowl Championship Series will be replaced by the College Football Playoff. The BCS conference commissioners announced on Tuesday the name of the new postseason system that starts in 2014.
During three days of meetings this week the group also is expected to choose the remaining three sites for the six-bowl semifinal rotation in the new system and the site of the first championship game to be held Jan. 12, 2015.
The website www.collegefootballplayoff.com is already up and running and allowing fans to vote on a new logo. It also has a Twitter handle: @cfbplayoff.
The new postseason format will create two national semifinals to be played New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, with the winners advancing. The six bowls in the playoff rotation will host marquee, BCS-type games on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day during the seasons they do not host a semifinal.Three semifinal spots have already been decided: the Rose, Orange and Sugar bowls.
