City school board President Richard Atkinson recognized fellow board member Lock P. Beachum Sr. at a school board meeting Tuesday.

Beachum, who’s serving his fourth term on the board, was honored last week at the National School Boards Association 73rd Annual Conference in San Diego. Beachum served on the association’s Council of Urban Boards of Education and received a plaque at the conference, honoring his service.

Beachum was the first person from Ohio to serve as chairman of the Council of Urban Boards.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, Penny Wells, coordinator of the Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, announced that the Ohio Senate had passed a resolution to make the first week in October Nonviolence Week statewide.

Nonviolence Week was started by Sojourn to the Past students. Students who participate in Sojourn travel for 10 days, visiting five states and following the path of the civil-rights movement of the 1960s.
