Youngstown State junior third baseman Drew Dosch was named the Horizon League batter of the week.

Dosch batted .458 with a homer, eight runs scored and six RBIs in YSU’s five games last week.

He had hits in all five games and registered multiple hits in three of them.

The Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored in YSU’s 13-4 win over Toledo on Wednesday, and he was 4-for-5 with three runs scored in the Penguins’ 12-7 victory over UIC on Saturday.

Austen Reiser aids North basketball team

East Palestine High senior Austen Reiser played for the North team in the Div. III-Div. IV Ohio All-Star basketball game.

Reiser collected two points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.

Pair advance to national tournament

Two boxers from the Southside Boxing Club advanced to the National Golden Gloves with victories Saturday night in the finals of the Cleveland Golden Gloves.

Vic Toney won the 165-pound division with a victory over Jose Rodriguez of Akron and John Gregory won the 152-pound division with a victory over David Rodriguez of Akron.

Both will represent the Lake Erie team in Salt Lake City Utah May 11-17.

Shockstrip-wearing Finest plays on April 27

The NYPD Finest football team will meet the Cleveland Warriors in a semi-pro game between first responders at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Mollenkopf Stadium.

Both the Finest and the Warriors are member teams of the National Public Safety Football League and the Finest will be using the Shockstrip specialized exterior helmet pads.

A Finest practice open to the public will be at Western Reserve High School on Friday from 9 to noon.

Several wrestlers from the Green Machine team competed at the USA Wrestling Ohio FS Qualifier.

At the Junior Nationals, at Men 50 KG, Tirso Lara finished in sixth place.

Sharon Speedway had racing on Saturday and posting victories were Davey Johnson-NDRL’s ULMS Super Late Models, Randy Hall-NDRL’S UEMS Modifieds, Ryan Fraley-Econo Mods and Scott Gilliland-Mini Stocks.

Davey Johnson took the lead on lap four and never looked back as he held off a late rally from 2011 NDRL’s ULMS Champion Mike Knight to capture his sixth series win in his career.

The victory came in the 25-lap Super Late Model feature, the first of four at the speedway in 2013, and was the 27th of Johnson’s career at Sharon.

North Carolina man rolls 1st PBA 900 series

THE VILLAGES, Fla.

A North Carolina man has rolled the first 900 series in Professional Bowlers Association history — three straight perfect games.

Joe Scarborough of Charlotte opened the first round of qualifying in the PBA50 Sun Bowl on Sunday with three games of 300 games, throwing 36 consecutive strikes.

Scarborough is a 50-year-old self-employed electrical contractor who was competing in his second event in the renamed PBA Senior Tour.
