2 hospitalized after shooting

A Monday afternoon shooting in a front yard sent two men to the hospital.

Police said one man was in critical condition and another in stable condition Monday night at St. Elizabeth Health Center after they were shot outside a residence at the 800 block of East Avondale Avenue shortly after 4 p.m.

Witnesses said they saw one person fleeing the scene while holding his chest. They said he ran west on Avondale before he fled through a backyard.

“I heard gunfire and saw a guy run past my door, so I closed my door so he couldn’t come in,” said one neighbor. “It is usually pretty quiet around here.”

Other neighbors said they have seen suspicious activity going on near the house before.

“We’ve had a dope problem on this street before, but it’s pretty quiet for the most part,” said one.

Police interviewed several people at the scene, but no arrests were made. A report from city police was not available late Monday.
