Eagle Scout awards

Joseph Humenick, son of Joe and Patricia Humenick of Salem, earned his Eagle Scout certification at a ceremony in February. Boy Scout Troop 80, Mount Olivet United Church of Christ, North Lima, bestowed the honor.

Humenick has been involved in scouting since 2004. He has earned his Tiger, Bear, Wolf, Webelo and Arrow of Light awards in Cub Scout Pack 116 in Greenford. He joined Troop 80 in 2007 and has held troop positions of chaplain, patrol leader and assistant patrol leader.

He has camped a total 66 nights, completed more than 117 hours of service projects and has earned 25 merit badges along with the four 2010 centennial merit badges. He has attended four years of summer camp at Camp Manatoc and Beaumont Scout Reservation. He participated in a 14-day backpacking trip at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M., in 2011.

He also has earned the Tote and Chit, Fire and Chit, Fifty Miler, Historic Trails awards, and is a member of the Order of the Arrow Wapashuwi Lodge 56.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he planned, coordinated, gathered materials and supervised the construction of a 25-foot aluminum flag pole for the Beaver Nature preserve in Greenford.

Humenick is a freshman at Cardinal Mooney Catholic School. His future plans include attending college for a degree in law. He is a member of St. Charles Catholic Church and participates in the youth group.

John F. Danks IV, son of John III and Tammy Danks of New Middletown, has earned his Eagle Scout certification. Free Methodist Community Church in New Middletown was the setting for his court of honor ceremony Feb. 11. Scoutmaster Dennis Mansfield and assistant scoutmaster Jim Touville presented the award.

Danks joined scouting as a tiger cub with Pack 119 at Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Petersburg. He has earned Cub Scouting’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light. In 2008, he joined Troop 49 of Free Methodist Community Church in New Middletown.

John has earned 40 merit badges, the BSA 50 miler award, the Greater Western Reserve Council 75-night camping award and the 7 Ranges Summer Camp fourth-year Pipestone award. He has accumulated 100 nights of camping, 83 miles of hiking and 79 hours of community service. He has helped lead Troop 49 as a patrol leader, assistant patrol leader and quartermaster. John also is a member of the Order of the Arrow Wapashuwi Lodge 56. For his Eagle Scout project, John built a kiosk at the Preserve Wetlands, near Western Reserve Road in Mill Creek Park.

Danks is a sophomore at Springfield Local High School, where he is a honor student as well as a member of the varsity golf team, the marching, pep and concert bands, drama club and chess club. He attends Poland Presbyterian Church.
