Bassetti: Canfield freshman rolls 300 game


Fifteen-year-old Andrew Letscher shot his first sanctioned 300 game at Twin-Star Lanes in Akron during the Ohio USBC northeastern regional tournament on April 7.

The Canfield High freshman’s three-game series was 300-232-224 — 756. Letscher is seeded No. 4 among the top 8 entered in the match play finals of today’s Youngstown Junior Masters at Holiday Bowl.

The champions will receive money deposited to their SMART Scholarship account, a crystal bowling pin to commemorate their win and an invitation to the youth awards banquet on May 19 at Mahoning Country Club at 2 p.m.

The top-finishing Junior Gold members will receive a paid entry into the Junior Gold Championships that will be held in Detroit, July 13-19.

Morris is champ

Morris Construction defeated Pizza Joe’s 3 games to 1 to win the Champion Men’s League championship at West Side Lanes.

Morris team members are Bill Steiner, Pat Blakeman, Jake Jackson, Ron Steiner Sr., Joe Steiner, Bill Bisker Sr. and Jim Summerville.

Pizza Joe’s team members are Ray Semko, Ricky Smith, Willie Heck, Bob Toman and Chuck Wolfe.

To advance, Morris beat C&G Pro Shop, 3-1, for first-half honors and Pizza Joe’s defeated Artists at Work, 3-1, in second-half roll-offs.

Dream Team of Bob Diamond III, Chris Bletso, Craig Bletso, Dom Rogers, Gary Kane and Cory O’Connell swept all three 3rds to reign as Aaron Rentals champion at Camelot.

Lepor, Fekety, Sciarra

The third 3rd champ in Wedgewood Ladies Trio was the Wedgewood Lanes team of Yvonne Lepor, Katie Fekety and Grace Sciarra.

On April 9, Teri Haefke’s 287 was the Ladies Trio’s high single-game score and Adam Barta’s 288-814 in Spiech Classic at Bell-Wick on April 15 was the top series.

Dan Montemarano’s 803 led Holiday’s Tri-County Classic with games of 278-278-247 and Tim Graham bowled his seventh 300 game and finished with a 247 average.

Jack’s Auto Sales won the Monday Classic League championship at West Side.

Jack’s members are Steve Paris, Jack Zeigler, Anthony Rosenburg, Rich Mauro, John Mshar Sr. and Tom Bobonick.

Former Austintown Fitch bowler Dan Clipse had 300-777 in Hively’s Sportsman at Amron, where Decinda Taylor’s 268-745 topped Stachowski/Noticeable Homes Ladies Trio.

Another leading score at Amron was Elmer Maynard’s 289-742 in Farmers National Bank Mixed Doubles.

John Bassetti covered bowling for The Vindicator. He has retired, effective today.
