YCS kicker Yargo headed to Wesminster

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Christian senior kicker Daniel Yargo will continue his career at Westminster.

Yargo, an Academic All-Ohioan, holds school records for points by a kicker and touchbacks. He helped the Eagles reach the Division VI regional finals this season.

Reese leads Wooster

Ed Reese, a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, helped the College of Wooster baseball team sweep a doubleheader from Hiram, 20-1, 12-2.

Reese hit three home runs to give him five on the season for the Fighting Scots (17-7). He added a triple, a double and four RBIs in each game.

Tim Calhoun (Canfield) went 3-for-3 in the opener.

Tom Joyce completes first half marathon

Tom Joyce, a 1969 graduate of Ursuline High School, completed his first half marathon, running the 13.1 mile Skunk Cabbage Classic in 2:04.

Joyce, 61, finished seventh in his age group.

Agent says Bengals to sign James Harrison

CINCINNATI

Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison is headed down the Ohio River to continue his career, agreeing to a two-year deal with the AFC North-rival Cincinnati Bengals.

It won’t be long before he gets his first chance to show Pittsburgh what it’s missing.

The Bengals play their first home game next season on Monday night, Sept. 16 against the Steelers, the team they knocked out of playoff competition last year. Harrison, who turns 35 in May, got used to making deep runs in the playoffs with Pittsburgh.

ABC, ESPN draw their most viewers for NBA

ABC and ESPN had their most viewers ever for NBA coverage, helped by the interest in the Miami Heat and their 27-game winning streak.

The two games added during the streak, the second-longest in NBA history, both earned a 2.9 rating, tying for the fourth highest-rated, regular-season games ever on ESPN.

The Heat’s Christmas Day victory over Oklahoma City in a finals rematch was ABC’s most-watched NBA regular-season game, with 9.6 million viewers.

Overall, ABC averaged 4.7 million viewers for its 15 broadcasts and ESPN averaged 1.8 million viewers for its 77 telecasts.

Hardened Wildcat wins Aqueduct feature

Hardened Wildcat captured his season debut, beating Be Bullish by a neck Friday in the $62,700 allowance feature at Aqueduct.

The 4-year-old chestnut gelding was making his first start since December. He prevailed in the four-horse field for his fourth victory in nine starts.

Ridden by Javier Castellano and trained by Chad Brown, Hardened Wildcat covered the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.40.

The winner went off at 2-1 and paid $6.60 and $3.50. Be Bullish returned $3.50 with Leave of Absence third. There was no show wagering.

This Ones for Phil, the 4-5 favorite, finished last.

Sounders sign former Virginia forward Bates

RENTON, Wash.

Seattle Sounders FC signed former University of Virginia forward Will Bates on Friday and waived defender Andrew Duran.

The 22-year-old Bates, selected fifth overall in January in the supplemental soccer draft, had 46 goals in 77 games in four seasons at Virginia.

“Will is dangerous in the box and always plays hard,” Sounders sporting director Chris Henderson said. “He can score with both feet and with his head. He provides us with depth at forward.”

Duran didn’t make an appearance for the Sounders and spent part of last season on loan to the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League.
