Youth group turns treasures into trip

The Canfield Presbyterian Church youth group sponsored its annual Trash and Treasure Sale April 13 to raise funds for its upcoming international mission trip.
Members of the youth group spent the previous week sorting through donations from the congregation and setting up the sale. Several members were on hand at the sale to check out customers, bag items and help customers out with their purchases.
Members of the church and preschool families donated all the items for the sale, including furniture, household items, picture frames, glassware, books, lamps, toys, holiday items and sporting equipment.
According to Julie Angelo, youth group leader, the 12 youth group members and nine adult church members will be traveling to the Dominican Republic and Haiti from July 24 through Aug. 2.
“We have 12 youth and nine adult church members going on this mission trip. It’s an intergenerational trip. Members range in age from 15 to 65,” Angelo said.
The group is working with Foundation for Peace and participants will be busy helping thousands of people.
“We will be doing construction and holding medical days during which we will help 2,000 to 3,000 people with such things as getting prescriptions filled. We are taking more than 3,500 toothbrushes to distribute and 250 hygiene kits. We will be distributing Tylenol, Advil and vitamins. We will also be holding a Vacation Bible school,” Angelo said.
The youth group has held several fundraisers in addition to the Trash and Treasure Sale, including a pepperoni roll sale and Handel’s Ice Cream cards.
“Obviously, this mission trip will cost more than our past mission trips because it is international. We haven’t gone on an international mission trip in over a decade. The congregation set aside mission money for an international trip, so that will take care of most of our larger costs,” Angelo said.
According to Angelo, the group chose the Dominican Republic and Haiti because of the opportunities the trip offered.
“We liked the variety of opportunities to help the people of those countries which were offered. We will also be having some fun playing baseball in the Dominican Republic and soccer in Haiti,” Angelo said.
Youth group members are appreciative for the help and support received from church members while fundraising for their mission trip.
“We appreciate all the help from the congregation and preschool families. We have received a lot of support and we are grateful for that,” Angelo said.
