Vets to build house for local heroes

American Veteran Post 301, with the help of Habitat for Humanity, hopes to build a house for a local veteran this fall or in the spring or 2014.

On April 19 at 9 a.m. at the Austintown Senior Center, a group of veterans that serves the public at the senior center, will be accepting applications (DD214 card needed for application) and answering questions on the project.

“All vets, whether they are male or female, as long as they meet our requirements, are eligible for application to the house. If a vet has special needs due to a disability, those needs will be met in the building of the house,” said Ron Borngesser, Sr., whose dream this house was. “I’ve been working on getting this house going for three years now, and I have heard more no’s than yes, but everyone at the senior center has been supportive, as well as at Habitat for Humanity, and it’s great that this is finally happening.”

Those planning on attending the talk April 19 are asked to bring a box of non-perishable food to donate to the Veterans Food Bank. For more information, call Ron Borngesser at 330-720-9780.

Veterans or family members of veterans with any questions or concerns about benefits, every day problems, or looking for a place to talk are encouraged to visit the Austintown Senior Center every Tuesday, where a group of veterans meets in the Veterans Corner.

The Veterans Corner has been available since 2011 and has since helped more than 70 veterans or family of veterans solve their disputes.
