Spring bird and wildflower hike set

The Friends of the Poland Forest Spring Bird and Wildflower hike will take place on May 5 at 9 a.m. Meet at the College Street entrance to the Poland Municipal Forest. The hike will last approximately one hour and will be at a slow to moderate pace. All are welcome.

YSU scholarship applications available

Applications for scholarships to Youngstown State University by the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest are now available by contacting Deborah Mottle at 330-729-0355. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University in order to be eligible. Deadline for applicants is June 1.

Teen driving school set

Tire Rack Street Survival will host a teen driving school on May 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Value City Department Store, 1128 Boardman-Poland Road. The program is open to licensed and permitted drivers ages 15-21. Cost is $75 per student.

Students will learn emergency breaking, skid control, how to control unintended over-steer and under-steer and how to avoid accidents. Students will be taught in their own car, not specially-prepared program vehicles, so the skills they learn can be translated to their daily driving experiences.

Easter Seals hosts 5K

Easter Seals will host its ninth annual 5K run/ one-mile walk on April 27 at Boardman Park. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Elton Beard Cabin and the walk and run will start at 9:30 a.m. Registration cost is $15 per person; children 12 and under are free. Participants who raise $25 and above will receive an official walk T-shirt.

SOV Employee of the Month named

Shepherd of the Valley-Poland named Aaron Simko as the employee of the month. Aaron has been employed in the SOV-Poland dietary department since 1996. Throughout the year, employees at each Shepherd site select employees to honor for their dedication and service.

5K walk set in Austintown

Friends of Fido of the Mahoning County Dog Pound is hosting its first 5K/one mile walk on May 4 at Austintown Township Park. Registration begins at 5 p.m. and the race is at 6:30 p.m., with the mile start to follow. Pre-registration is $16 and is available online at www.imathlete.com. Cost the day of the race is $20.

MCCTC hosts Administrative Assistant Day

The Adult Career Center Mahoning County Career and Technical Center will host its ninth annual Administrative Assistant Day event on April 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Bistro at MCCTC. The luncheon will feature a comedic performance by 34 West Theater Company of the play “We Go Everywhere Together,” a show about life, love and hip replacements. Mommy & Me Tea May 5

The Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion Show will be May 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at The Lariccia Family Community Center at Boardman Park. Mommy and Me for Tea and Fashion Show is a semiformal tea for girls 3-8 and their mom, grandma or other adult. Enjoy an afternoon tea with cookies and finger foods. The girls will model their own special outfit of the day and have a professional photographer take a photo for a keepsake.

Tickets are now on sale at the park office. Boardman residents are $14 per couple, non-residents are $16. Additional guests are $6. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Screen your blood pressure

The Poland library will host a blood pressure screening on Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Mahoning Chapter of American Red Cross.

Babies & books at library

Babies ages 6 to 23 months can join the Poland library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader every Wednesday in April at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Lego my library

Children, 6 and up, can create Lego designs at Canfield library on Tuesday from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

AWBA to host Chinese auction

The annual Chinese auction for the Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will be held at the Ursuline Center at 4280 Shields Road on April 28 from 12:30 to 4 p.m.. The doors will open at 12:30 and the drawing will begin at 3 p.m. Ticket holders will have free refreshments and food and drink will be provided.

The donation for a ticket is $5 and you can purchase a ticket at the door or call Judy Codespote at 330-502-9413 for tickets prior to the event. There will be gifts for children, men and women and special raffles of items greater than $25 in value.

All proceeds will benefit the education fund. Presently, the chapter is sponsoring four students attending schools such as Youngstown State, Kent State and John Carroll University.

Hospice of the Valley offers training course

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Friday at Hospice House, 9803 Sharrot Road. Classes are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks through May 10.

Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team.

Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways, including companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes as well as helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, as well as western Pennsylvania. Volunteers will be assigned to patients closer to their homes. Doctor hosts free seminar

Dr. Noah Erickson will host a free seminar for families and professionals on the treatment he offers on Monday at 7 p.m. His focus is helping children who are on the autism spectrum, have speech and language delays, ADHD, as well as, other health issues, such as ear infections, allergies, gastroesophageal reflux and other digestive problems. Erickson has 15 years of experience and education in human biology, sports medicine, holistic autism treatment and he is also a medical acupuncturist and a chiropractic physician.

Club hosts charity raffle

The Newcomers Club of Canfield, formerly known as Welcome Wagon Club of Canfield, is conducting a charity raffle, the proceeds of which will be donated to 20 or more local charities. Tickets are $20 each or three for $50.

Grand prize is a one-week Starwood vacation stay (airfare not included, some conditions apply), donated by Betty and John Schuld. Second prize is four tickets to the Culinary Arts Center, donated by John Zidian Co., Inc. Third prize is a Q Series Weber Tailgate Gas Grill, donated by Youngstown Propane, Fireplace and Patio. Fourth prize is a Spa Package donated by Reflections Wellness Center. Fifth prize is three-room cleaning performed by Beatitude House.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will be at Squaw Creek at Avalon Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Poland library will host Appy Hour: Teen Edition on Friday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices. See a variety of apps that will make your life easier and more fun. For teens in grades 7-12.

Local preschool offers new hours, classes

Poland Presbyterian Church Preschool and Daycare offers services for children ages 2 1/2 years to kindergarten. Preschool is available for younger children from 9 a.m. until noon and for older Pre-K children from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Poland Presbyterian is now offering “home away from home” before preschool and after preschool hours.
