Children of all ages were invited to the Castaway Carnival at the Boardman library on April 3. The carnival was put on by librarians Karen Saunders and John Yingling.

“We knew that the kids in the Boardman schools were on Spring Break, and we wanted to offer kids and parents an opportunity to have fun at the library and get a literacy lesson at the same time,” said Yingling.

Kids were able to enjoy different games with varied skill levels throughout the carnival. Some games included a ring toss, plush bowling, a rubber ducky rhyming-word matching game and Bingo.

“I hoped that they would experience the thrill of accomplishment when they were able to toss the ball through a moving target that was Spot’s mouth, or the pure fun of picking ducks from a duck pond looking for matching pairs of rhyming words,” said Saunders.

Children attending the carnival also got to see a performance of the flea circus.

“It’s fun to imagine the three fleas: Fiona, diving Derwood and Bob having fun flying through the air and then splashing the children with water. I love to hear children squeal with delight (with the help of my trusty water toy) as they watch and wait for what happens next at the flea circus,” said Saunders.

The children watched in amazement as imaginary flea Bob shot out of the cannon, Fiona flew across the trapeze and Derwood splashed into a pool. After the circus, children enjoyed a reading of “Put Me in the Zoo” by Robert Lopshire.

“I wanted them to have my enthusiasm for the classic book ‘Put Me in the Zoo.’ I want the library to be a destination of pure fun and a chance to select their favorite author,” said Saunders.
